Microsoft-backed OpenAI has unveiled its latest software project: "Sora," an AI model that can generate realistic videos from simple text descriptions. The company unveiled Sora on Thursday, 15th of February, 2024.
At the time this article is published, Sora is currently available for red teaming, which helps identify flaws in the AI system, as well as for use by visual artists, designers and filmmakers to gain feedback on the model, the company said in a statement.
"Sora is able to understand complex scenes, including multiple characters, diverse motions, and detailed backgrounds," explains OpenAI in their blog post.
Here's how it works: You provide a textual prompt, and the model translates it into a dynamic, 60-second video. Imagine conjuring a scene of a robot dancing on the moon, or a bustling cityscape in the year 2200 - with Sora, these your imaginative visions can be brought to life with just a few words.
Aside that, you can also use Sora to animate images, OpenAI made it clear in the blogpost. However, it's important to let you know that the video generation software called "Sora" was built on OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot.
The implications of this technology are vast. Sora could empower artists, filmmakers, and educators to create content with unparalleled ease and speed. Imagine generating explainer videos for educational purposes, crafting animated storyboards for film projects, or even developing personalized marketing materials tailored to individual preferences.
However, as with any powerful technology, concerns arise regarding potential misuse and competitors. OpenAI acknowledges the need for responsible development and implementation, emphasizing their commitment to addressing ethical and safety considerations. The company has already begun collaborating with experts to identify and mitigate potential risks associated with manipulated video content.
Speaking of competitors on the other hands, Reuters reported that social media platforms like Meta has give more substance to its image generation model "Emu" last year to add two AI-based features that can edit and generate videos from text prompts. It's also highlighted that the Facebook parent company is looking to compete with Microsoft, Alphabet's Google and Amazon in the rapidly transforming generative AI universe.
Sora is a work-in-progress project and it's currently in its early stages, available to a limited group for testing and feedback. OpenAI plans to refine the model and eventually make it more widely accessible. With these, you can use this transformative technology responsibly.
