Lagos to relocate Computer Village from Ikeja to New Market

Computer Village, Lagos

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has unveiled plans to relocate the iconic Computer Village, a hub for electronics, phones and technology in Ikeja, to the Katangowa market in Abule Egba.

This move, announced on February 17th, 2024, is part of the government's urban development agenda and aims to address several concerns surrounding the current location.

The Computer Village, known for its vibrant energy and diverse offerings, has also faced criticism for traffic congestion, disorganized infrastructure, and safety issues.

The LASG believes the relocation to Katangowa, a designated market space currently under development, will provide a more organized and accessible environment for both traders and customers.

"We are trying to reorganize all our markets in the state," said Dr. Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development, while participating in a collaborative inspection and enforcement exercise. "The Computer Village being relocated to Katangowa is just one example."

The new market promises several improvements, including:

  1. Modern infrastructure: Dedicated shops, proper waste management, and improved security measures.
  2. Enhanced accessibility: Ample parking spaces and potentially easier access via public transportation.

However, the relocation plan has also generated concerns. Some traders worry about the impact on their businesses, particularly established customer bases and potential loss of foot traffic.

The distance from Ikeja to Katangowa also raises questions about accessibility for existing customers, especially those relying on public transportation.

However, the LASG has assured stakeholders of a "hitch-free movement" and is actively engaging with traders to address their concerns. They emphasize the long-term benefits of a planned and organized market environment, not just for businesses but also for the overall development of the city.
